Printed Motor Works Limited is based in the UK with a manufacturing facility in Alton,Hampshire. The company is focused on two strategic areas:
- Sales,distribution and manufacture of flat armature motors and joysticks. We are one of the world’s leading authorities on the manufacture and design of pancake motors and continue to explore new areas of application for this unique motor design.
- Development,design,manufacture and supply of new electric motors and drive systems in conjunction with clients on a project by project basis. We are considered a world leader in the development of compact brushless DC motors for aerospace and other specialist applications. We are also leaders in new electric motor drive systems having pioneered the development of the electric scooter,the in-wheel motor for automotive applications (now owned by Protean Electric Limited) and the application of the in-wheel motor to the medical mobility,industrial,marine and leisure markets.

Printed Motor Works is Europe’s largest manufacturer of printed motors. Founded in 1963 as PML we are the original European manufacturer of pancake motors. The US manufacturing arm from the same decade was PMI Motion Technologies Inc. (PMI) which later became part of Kollmorgen,now part of Danaher Motion.
In the 1970s PML was sold to Pilgrim House Group before being sold in the 1980s to B Elliott plc before moving into private ownership in 2001. In 2007 PML received investment from Oak Investment Partners for its in-wheel motor technology as applied to the automotive sector. On 18 March 2009 the company split out into two completely separately owned entities:Printed Motor Works Limited and Protean Electric Limited focusing on in-wheel automotive drive motor technology.

Printed armature motors,or pancake motors as they are also known,are employed for various industrial applications wherever rapid stop-start,zero cogging,low inductance,precise electronic motor control,a low thermal time constant or just a slim,flat packaging profile is needed.
Printed Motor Works’ flat armature motors differ from conventional DC servomotors in their unique slotless disc armature design. This enables them to deliver a concentrated level of performance in both incremental motion and continuous speed that is not attainable with conventional iron-core motor designs.
Typical applications include servomechanisms,motion control, industrial robots,cnc machining,printing machinery,magnetic audio and video tape drive control,medical mobility,flight simulators,marine autopilots and high ambient temperature ventilation.

Development
Printed Motor Works works closely with select clients to develop complete systems or discrete solutions. Recent projects have included development of a complete system for control and propulsion of a sports accessory,a revolutionary display system using motorised rotating light emitting diodes and a motorised luggage system.
Our services span from merely supplying mechanical,electronics and software engineering services to the delivery and eventual management of a complete production solution.
